Proving Culture - Webinar Series Exploring How to Identify and Evaluate Workplace Culture

Introduction

Bill Barnes introduces the Proving Culture Sessions. Hello, I am your host Bill Barnes. With over three decades of experience managing workplace hazards and risks, both physical and non-physical, I hope to bring my gained knowledge and awareness of psychosocial safety and workplace culture to an audience of ISO auditors and other assessors that are tasked with evaluating the existence and effectiveness of workplace culture in organizations.

Proving Culture (TM) is a channel dedicated to the advancement of workplace culture and a psychologically safe workplace for current and future generations.

The big plan is to begin with this series of videos to begin discussion on what works, what might work and what hasn't worked. There will likely be many more sessions in the coming months and years. Join me on this journey.

Session 2

The second of three sessions on Proving Workplace Culture explores some current frameworks for identifying and evaluating workplace culture.  We explore the ISO 10010 and ISO 45003 standards introduced in Session 1 in a bit deeper discussion.  It should not be a surprise that workplace culture exists in currently certified management systems.  The opportunity to recognize existence and benefit will drive further development of workplace culture.

Session 4

Hello and welcome back to the Proving Culture sessions.  In the first three sessions, we explored the idea of workplace culture to create an image for assessors to look for when identifying workplace culture.  We provided an overview of current and future ISO standards expectations for workplace quality and/or safety culture.

Now we will begin a series of sessions taking deeper dives into some of the concepts and materials we introduced to deepen our understanding and awareness of the tools available to prove culture is in place and working in your organization.  In this session we will take a deeper dive into the ISO 10010 Quality Culture Guidance Standard for ISO 9001 implementers.  This includes definitions for quality culture, planning for quality culture, monitoring and measuring progress of an effective culture and tools for both implementers and auditors to measure success of quality culture.

Session 5

In this session we will add some color to the various elements of the ISO 10010 standard presented in Session 4 of the Proving Culture series.  We will illustrate seven actions that demonstrate presence of a workplace quality culture so that practitioners and auditors may see examples of observations to train their eyes and ears to prove culture exists. There are many different forms these efforts may take.  Recognizing the efforts to improve through engagement and leadership commitment, auditors can gauge the current and future states that an organization exhibits on their journey towards continual improvement.

Session 6

In Session 6 we shift from drawing a picture of workplace quality culture towards workplace safety culture with a deeper dive into Psychosocial Safety in the Workplace Guidance Standard ISO 45003:2022 that we introduced in Session 2 of this series.  A deeper dive across three categories of psychological and psychosocial workplace safety: how work is organized, social factors and workplace environments as defined in the guidance standard are illustrated.  Some external sources are mentioned that add to the learning for viewers, including I. David Daniels’ book Psychosocial Hazards are Real and Managing stress and Psychosocial Risks E-Guide from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work. https://osha.europa.eu/en/tools-and-resources/e-guides/e-guide-managing-stress-and-psychosocial-risks.  An review of offerings in these six sessions is provided with some key takeaways.
