Internal auditing approaches are evolving. Traditionally, internal auditors have often been positioned as compliance inspectors, focused on checking requirements and documenting nonconformities. However, modern management systems, aligned with ISO management system principles as well as industry-specific best practice, ways of working, and organizational culture, increasingly demand something more valuable: insight, critical thinking, and meaningful contribution to performance. This presentation explores the evolving role of the internal auditor as a modern systems thinker, moving beyond checklist-based verification toward pattern recognition, risk-based thinking, contextual understanding, and high-quality questioning that unlocks deeper insight and drives meaningful improvement.
