Great question, Jamie!
For me, and the way I approach any subject I involve myself in, I would suggest asking the following questions:
What separates a technically competent auditor from an exceptional auditor? And...do I want to be exceptional?
As auditors, we all have strengths and weaknesses. I read a book many years ago entitled, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". Over time, I have learned to implement this approach into my life.
Both levels are valuable. However, for me, it is a decision box on a process map and one path is more rigorous than the other.
I suggest new auditors make that decision at the onset of their careers and follow the path they choose, and be completely honest with themselves along the way.
