  • 1.  What's one question you wish you had asked earlier in your certification journey?

    Posted 06-30-2026 01:48 PM

Whether you're certified, currently working toward certification, or supporting others through the process, there are often things that only become clear after you've been through it.

Maybe it was about preparing for an audit, understanding CPD, navigating renewal, finding the right resources, or knowing what to expect after training.

What's one question you wish you had asked earlier, or one piece of advice you'd give to someone who is just getting started?

Your response may help another member avoid confusion and feel more confident in their next step.

I have felt for years that the best training on management system implementation or internal auditing is to take the training and become certified to those standards.

When preparing for personal certification that requires Professional Registration Interview (PRI), always keep a habit to record down the details of day-to-day work, past projects, past incidents and etc.

Use STAR (Situation Task Action Result) framework to tell the interviewers a story on what, why and how to resolve the work challenges that demonstrate your competence in responsibility, management and leadership in your area of expertise.

Good thread. Building on Chris and Richard, mine was "is this certification actually recognised where I want to work". I assumed any certificate carried the same weight and learned otherwise. Now when I train and mentor people at Audit Workshop I push them to pick the certification from the role they want to be in, not the other way round.

    Great question, Jamie!

For me, and the way I approach any subject I involve myself in, I would suggest asking the following questions:

What separates a technically competent auditor from an exceptional auditor?  And...do I want to be exceptional?

As auditors, we all have strengths and weaknesses.  I read a book many years ago entitled, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People".  Over time, I have learned to implement this approach into my life.

Both levels are valuable.  However, for me, it is a decision box on a process map and one path is more rigorous than the other.

I suggest new auditors make that decision at the onset of their careers and follow the path they choose, and be completely honest with themselves along the way.
