Last week, we looked at Clause 6.1.4 Planning action This week we shall take a look at Clause 6.2 OH&S objectives and planning to achieve them
Clause 6.2 OH&S objectives and planning to achieve them
Clause 6.2.1 OH&S objectives
Excerpts from the standard
The organization shall establish OH&S objectives at relevant functions and levels in order to maintain and continually improve the OH&S management system and OH&S performance (see 10.3)
The OH&S objectives shall:
a) Be consistent with OH&S policy
b) Measurable (if practicable) or capable of performance evaluation
c) Take into account:
-
Applicable requirements
-
The results of assessment of risks and opportunities( see clause 6.1.2.2 and 6.1.2.3)
-
The results of consultation with workers( see clause 5.4, and where they exist,, workers representative
d) Be monitored
e) Be communicated
f) Be updated as appropriate
You must establish OH&S corporate or operational objectives, goals, targets, and KPIs that are relevant to your functions as well as your business activities. For example, one of Lucmar Automobiles Limited's objectives is to conduct four training sessions for all employees per month. This is a measurable objective that is monitored quarterly and reviewed yearly, specifically on December 31st.
Remember, these objectives must align with our statement of intent in the policy (Clause 5). Furthermore, they must be measurable (i.e., in numbers) and capable of performance evaluation. Taking the Lucmar Automobiles Limited example, you can see that we are fully compliant with the standard because we can determine exactly how many training sessions were conducted each month. This trackability is crucial for collecting data for performance evaluation. This way, we can see how well we are achieving our set objectives. If we are not meeting them, we must provide a justification and ensure there is a plan in place to address the shortfall.
Furthermore, we must meet the applicable requirements we identified in Clause 4.2 (Needs and expectations of Workers and Interested Parties), Clause 6.1.3 (Legal and Other Requirements), and Clause 5.4 (Consultation and Participation of Workers). We therefore set objectives specifically to fulfill these requirements.
To communicate these objectives effectively, we can draw from our knowledge of Clause 7.4 to determine who, when, and what to communicate. We will cover this elaborately in the section for Clause 7.
As I mentioned earlier, we must update these objectives continually to capture any lapses or changes in the business. Remember, everything we do will ultimately help us meet the continuous improvement requirements of the OH&S management system.
Once again, you can see how these clauses are interrelated and how fulfilling one clause helps to achieve the requirements of others.
Next week, we shall look at Clause 6.2.2 planning to achieve OH&S objectives
Thank you! I appreciate your warm wishes and look forward to hearing your thoughts
