    Robert, thirty years in petrochemical operations and process safety is exactly the industry depth certification bodies struggle to find, so I would not undersell it. The practical route in is usually to approach the certification bodies directly rather than wait for something to be advertised. Most of them run a trainee or contract auditor pathway where you do witnessed audits alongside an experienced lead auditor until they sign you off, and in your case the scopes worth chasing are the high hazard and process industry ones you already know from the inside.

    The other thing worth doing before you approach anyone is getting your audit log in order. Every internal audit you have led, the days, the standard, the scope and who supervised you. In my experience training people into this, the barrier is almost never the technical knowledge, it is that they cannot evidence the audit days on paper when a scheme manager asks. Put a clean log in front of someone and the conversation moves a lot faster.
