I've been internal auditor for a while now in the avionics industry. I just got my ISO9001 lead auditor cert and ready to hit the road.

I plan get my AS9100 when I qualify. Any suggestions for a newbie are appreciated.

Welcome Carlos. The move from internal auditing to third party work is less about the standard and more about pace and evidence discipline, so the habit worth building early is deciding what you will sample before you walk into an area, and holding to it when the day starts running late. Coming out of avionics you already carry a traceability mindset that takes most new auditors a year to develop, and it will show in your findings.

The other suggestion is to get your first witnessed audits booked sooner than feels comfortable. Most people sit on the certificate waiting to feel ready and the readiness only really arrives on site. Smaller regional certification bodies are usually more open to a new auditor than the large ones, and your sector background is the genuine differentiator when you approach them, so lead with the avionics experience rather than the certificate.

Carlos, welcome to the community! Your avionics experience is an excellent foundation. As you prepare for AS9100, strengthen your knowledge of risk management, configuration control, product safety, counterfeit parts prevention, and special processes. Participate in witnessed or supervised audits, practice evidence-based reporting, and review ISO 19011 auditing principles. Building sector-specific experience and maintaining auditor impartiality will also support your development.
